TNPSC CTSE eligibility: rules candidates often miss

Qualification date and study pattern

The essential educational, technical and experience requirements must be held on 31 August 2026 . TNPSC expects the prescribed degree sequence—normally SSLC, HSC/diploma or equivalent, undergraduate degree and postgraduate degree where required. Experience must be acquired after obtaining the qualification prescribed for the post.

Candidates claiming an equivalent qualification should retain the relevant government equivalence order. Where a degree certificate was not issued by the notification date, TNPSC accepts specified proof that the result was published on or before that date.

Tamil-language knowledge

Adequate knowledge of Tamil is required on the notification date. It can generally be established through Tamil studied at SSLC/HSC/degree level, Tamil-medium study, or TNPSC's Second Class Language Test (Full Test). The notification gives separate wording for Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Research Assistant, Port Officer and System Analyst, so applicants to those posts should follow their post-specific condition.

Experience-heavy posts

Do not upload a generic employment letter for a role that demands industry capacity, managerial level or a specific work area. TANCEM roles require cement-plant or industrial-safety experience; TIDCO project roles specify project, contract, infrastructure or financial-model experience. Use the exact Annexure V certificate format and ensure the competent authority signs it.

TNPSC CTSE 2026 age limit

Age is calculated on 1 July 2026 , and the minimum is 21 years for every post. There is no single upper-age number for all 31 posts.

Open-category candidates: practical guide

  • Maximum 32 years applies to many Level 22 and project/technical posts.
  • Assistant Director of Industries and Commerce and District Library Officer allow up to 37 years.
  • Senior Entomologist and Financial Advisor-cum-Company Secretary allow up to 37 years.
  • Port Officer allows up to 40 years.
  • Assistant General Manager (Finance) allows up to 47 years.
  • The notification provides different PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and Destitute Widow ceilings post by post; several posts are not identified as suitable for PwBD.

Reserved-community candidates

For many posts, SC/SC(A)/ST/MBC-DC/BC(OBCM)/BCM candidates have no maximum age limit , which TNPSC defines as not having completed 60 years on 1 July 2026 or at selection/appointment. Exceptions include Port Officer, AGM Finance, Bursar and the three SIPCOT Assistant Manager posts, for which the specific table ceilings apply.

For Assistant Manager (General), Assistant Manager and Assistant Manager (Finance), the community ceiling is 34 for BC(OBCM)/BCM/MBC-DC and 37 for SC/SC(A)/ST. Always check your exact row in Sections 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 before relying on a general summary.

Selection process and exam pattern

TNPSC describes two main stages—written examination and interview—with certificate verification between them.

  1. Written CBT: Paper I and the post-linked Paper II.
  2. On-screen certificate verification: normally 1:3 or 1:4 for posts without experience and 1:10 for posts requiring experience.
  3. Physical certificate verification and interview: shortlisting follows written marks, category vacancies and reservation rules.
  4. Final ranking: Paper I Parts B and C, Paper II and the 60-mark interview are combined.
  5. Counselling: conducted where applicable before appointment by the concerned department or organization.

Paper I and Paper II marks

For posts other than Tamil and English Reporter, Paper I is a three-hour objective CBT. Part A is the SSLC-standard Tamil Eligibility Test with 100 questions for 150 marks; candidates need 60 marks. Part B has 75 degree-standard General Studies questions and Part C has 25 SSLC-standard aptitude/mental-ability questions; together they carry 150 marks. Paper II is the relevant degree/PG subject paper with 200 questions, three hours and 300 marks.

For Tamil Reporter and English Reporter, Paper II is the respective diploma-standard stenography subject: 100 questions, 90 minutes and 300 marks. In both patterns, final merit is out of 510 marks : Paper I Parts B+C, Paper II and 60 interview marks. Reserved categories need 135 aggregate qualifying marks in the merit papers; Others need 180. Part A Tamil eligibility must first be cleared with 60/150 unless an eligible disability exemption is properly claimed.

The TNPSC CTSE 2026 exam date has not yet been announced. The subject-paper syllabus is part of the notification annexures; avoid using a syllabus from the Non-Interview exam by mistake.

Interview Posts vs Non-Interview Posts: do not use the wrong notice

TNPSC has separate CTSE notifications for Interview and Non-Interview posts. This page covers Notification No. 8/2026, Interview Posts, 170 vacancies . The Non-Interview notification has different posts, eligibility, application identity and selection structure. Before applying, confirm that the portal displays Notification No. 8/2026 and your intended post code.
